European Patent Office: António Campinos was appointed as the president of European Patent Office (EPO) on 02-07-2018 succeeding Benoît Battistelli, for a term of five years. The Union Cabinet has approved the creation of one post each of Vice-Chairperson and Member in the National Commission for Safai Karmacharis. The decision is intended to optimize functioning of the Commission and for fulfilling desired objectives of welfare and development of the target group. Background: The National Commission for Safai Karmacharis is working for the welfare of both Safai Karamcharis and Manual Scavengers. It is mandated to work towards elimination of inequalities in status facilities and opportunities for Safai Karamcharis and has an important role to ensure rehabilitation of all the identified manual scavengers on a time-bound basis. Under Section 31 of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013, the Commission is to perform functions namely: a. To monitor the implementation of the Act; b. To enquire into complaints regarding contravention of provisions of the Act; and c. To advice Central and State Governments for effective implementation of the Act. Yuji Iwasawa elected to International Court of Justice

International Court of Justice: Japanese international law professor Yuji Iwasawa was elected a Judge of the International Court of Justice, the UN’s principal judicial body on 22.6.2018. He filled the vacancy left by 85-year-old Hisashi Owada who retired on June 7. He won the votes of 184 countries of the 193 member nations in the UN General Assembly, and the support of all 15 member countries on the UN Security Council. He will serve the remainder of his predecessor’s nine-year term, which runs until 5.2.2021. Iwasawa is currently a professor of international law at the University of Tokyo graduate school, and most recently served as chairperson of the UN Human Rights Committee. In addition to chairing the UN Human Rights Committee, he served as President of the Japanese Society of International Law, Vice-Chair of the London-based International Law Association, and as Judge and Vice-President of the Asian Development Bank Administrative Tribunal in Manila, Philippines. Three new appointments to the UK’s top appeal court

Lady Justice Arden DBE and Lord Justice Kitchin will join the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom as Justices on 1 October 2018, followed by Lord Justice Sales on 11 January 2019, as was announced on June 27, 2018. Her Majesty The Queen made each of the appointments on the advice of the Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor, following the recommendations of an independent selection commission. The commission consulted across each of the Supreme Court’s three UK jurisdictions before making its recommendations. These appointments follow the retirement of Lord Mance, former Deputy President of the Court, in June 2018. Lord Hughes and Lord Sumption are due to retire in August and December 2018 respectively.
